Where it began…
Sober. Sassy. Successful.
That’s how I envisioned my future when I chose the sober life—and let me tell you, it’s brighter and better than I ever imagined. But first, I had to define it for myself.
Because here’s the thing: we need to change the narrative around sobriety. It’s not about deprivation—it’s a vibe. A seriously good one. Yet much of society still doesn’t see it that way.
So, how did I define it?
The traditional definition of sober feels dull—grey, muted, solemn, serious. No wonder sobriety isn’t seen as an adventure! But then I discovered the Greek word sophron, which appears in the Bible and which we can derive sober from. It speaks of being calm and collected, having good sense, sound judgment, wisdom, and staying level-headed in times of stress.
Now that’s a definition I can get behind. Especially after the years before I embraced sober vibes—when I was anything but level-headed.
Sassy—full of energy and confidence? Yes, please! These are qualities I love people to use when describing me—especially now that I’ve nailed that good judgment thing.
Successful—accomplishing a desired aim or result. Success always felt out of reach when I was drinking. Redefining my life meant finally experiencing a real sense of accomplishment.
So, I made a choice: I would be clear-minded, energetic, confident, and accomplished. Or, as I like to say…
Sober. Sassy. Successful.
